Saw my first one of whatever this is.  (at Chiles Peach Orchard) 
Turns out she’s a Red Velvet Ant, which is a large, flightless wasp that lays eggs in bumble bee burrows, giving the baby wasp a meaty feast in the form of a larval we that can’t escape. 
Her sting is so powerful she’s also know as a “cow killer ant”.
